I invite You to a tour dedicated to the main Orthodox shrines of Kiev — Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, St. Sophia Cathedral, St. Vladimir's and St. Michael's Cathedrals. Visiting Kiev means visiting these holy places and leave there a part of You and Your immortal soul...
Let's start with Kiev-Pechersk Lavra — one of the most admired in the world, the great Christian center of ancient Kievan Rus, founded in 1051 by reverend monks Anthony and Theodosius. Crowds of pilgrims from all over the world come here - to worship the saints, whose incorrupt relics are kept in caves and pray to the miracle-working icons. Once on the territory of the monastery were hospital buildings, icon-painting workshops and now there are the exhibits of Kiev-Pechersk Preserve (in particular, the Museums of microminiatures, of historical treasures, of books and printing, of Ukrainian folk decorative art, of music, theater and film art), a lot of expositions and galleries.
Next, we head for St. Michael's Golden Domed Monastery — the first gilded cathedral of the XII century. Here we'll see the rebuilt Cathedral in honor of Archangel Michael in the Ukrainian Baroque style, Bell Tower (1716-1719) and 300-year-old John the Evangelist's Church. This revived holy place attracts the attention because of its extraordinary beauty.
Next stop — near the St. Sophia Cathedral. It was built more than 1000 years ago and is still considered the specific sacred place of ancient Kiev, its genuine pearl. Founded in the XI century, following the example of other Sophia of Constantinople, nowadays Sofia of Kiev is famous for its unique frescoes, mosaics, its indescribable atmosphere.
Finally, St. Volodymyr's Cathedral, which bears the name of the first Christian Prince, St. Vladimir — the Baptist of Kievan Rus. St. Vladimir's Cathedral impresses not only with its gorgeous paintings (the pieces of art of such masters as M.Vrubel, V.Vasnetsov and many others), but with the relics of St. Barbara, one of the earliest Christians who suffered for the faith and were martyred. Of course, St. Vladimir's Cathedral — a special page in the architecture, history and culture of Kiev.
After visiting this tour, You will certainly respect Kyiv's Sacred Places, Your heart will be filled with joy and the soul — with peace and quiet!
